If you haven’t tried a pellet grill before or if you’re thinking about giving one a shot, the Pit Boss Austin XL is an entry level pellet grill with stiff competition in the market.

There are different types of wood to use for smoking bbq on an offset smoker, but the great thing about the Pit Boss Pellet grill is it uses small pellets – heating up the pellet smoker in a very short amount of time.

The biggest competitor to the Pit Boss Austin XL is the Traeger Pro Pellet grill. The difference between the Pit Boss Austin XL grill is primarily pricing. The Austin XL can be purchased at WalMart for right around $500 and the Traeger costs at least $300 more.

We believe this is the best pellet grill for the money. This pellet smoker bbq grill review will give you the pros and cons and give you our answer to the question “which pellet grill is the best to buy?”

We used BBQ Hardwood Pellets Competition Blend- made specifically for the Pit Boss pellet grills. You can buy these on Amazon here: http://thebarbecuelab.com/recommends/pitboss-competition-blend-pellets/

The Pit Boss Austin XL has a thin metal body, making it harder to cook in harsh weather conditions. However, we love using it in the summer here in the Midwest U.S.!

When grilling, the digital temperature readout on the lower left and the thermometer on the top lid may not always match. In addition, there are some temperatures that are missing on the grill set dial that would come in handy with specific recipes that use 275 degrees or 375 degrees.

The Pit Boss wood pellet grill is very transportable. There are two large wheels attached to the right side of the grill. But what we love the most about this grill is the wheel locks on the left side legs. These wheel locks have saved us from having the grill blow away during harsh weather more times than we can count. However, it can be hard to transport on non- flat surfaces. These wheels were made for flat and smooth surfaces.

While this may be a cheap pellet grill in price, it doesn’t feel any cheaper than a comparable Traeger. The Austin XL can be picked up at your local Walmart and online on the Walmart website: http://thebarbecuelab.com/recommends/pitboss-austin-xl/

Overall, the Austin XL Pit Boss Pellet Grill is a great grill! It’s easy to use and is rather inexpensive to operate. We can’t wait to try future recipes on this grill!
