Here’s how I made this sifter box that can be used to preserve and prolong the life of the coals in your smoker or other grill/stove/fireplace/firepit. After the coals have cooled, use this to sift out the larger chunks for re-use, and discard the smaller bits and ash.

It only took me a few hours to build, and only about $40 in materials. If you buy narrower boards for the legs, you can avoid any rip cuts and build this whole thing using only a jigsaw (though that’d make cutting all those holes for the sifter part VERY tedious).
