In this video I’ll show you how to make a fire pit with an adjustable draft for less than $50. I minimized costs by building it below ground with cinder blocks.
NOTE: Although I have had no problem so far, I have been informed that the paver I used at the bottom of the pit could explode under the intense heat from a fire. Thus, I would recommend using something like fire bricks instead. Some concerns were voiced about cinder blocks, as well. Just remember that I’m not an expert, and this video is for information purposes only.
The design is based on a type of fire pit called the Dakota fire hole. Here’s a good video that explains how it works: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffldYo4EVCg&t=477s
I have found that the fire pit I built burns very hot and efficiently, and produces very little smoke once it gets going. If you put in the right kindling, it starts right up with no trouble.
Here is a complete materials list:
-1 bag drainage rock
-5 cored concreted blocks (the ones with holes)
-3 concrete cap blocks (the solid ones)
-1 one foot square patio stone (but this can explode, so don’t use this, use fire bricks instead)
-4 6″x9″ patio stone
-8 6″x6″ patio stone
-1 4″x96″ flexible aluminum dryer vent duct
-1 4″ drain grate
